What is Gold and How is it Made? – The Story Behind the Precious Metal

Gold is found in rock ore, as native gold fragments, or in natural alloys like electrum, which contains silver. Its density causes gold to settle in streambeds, sediments, and ocean floors, while geological activity like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions helps deposit gold in quartz veins.


Global Gold Reserves

Despite its fame, gold makes up only a tiny fraction of the Earth's crust. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), roughly 244,000 U.S. tons (7.8 million troy ounces) of gold have been mined throughout history. Due to its high density (19.32 g/cm³), all the gold ever mined could fit into a cube just 70 feet across.

Economically viable gold deposits are rare, but estimates suggest about one million tons of gold exist in the Earth’s crust.

Can Gold Be Synthesized?

Historically, alchemists tried to turn base metals like lead into gold, but chemical reactions cannot change one element into another. The number of protons in an atom’s nucleus determines the element, so creating gold requires nuclear reactions.

In 1924, Japanese physicist Hantaro Nagaoka successfully created gold by bombarding mercury with neutrons. Later, Glenn Seaborg converted small amounts of lead into gold in 1980, and Soviet scientists accidentally did the same in 1972 during nuclear experiments.

While technically possible, these processes are extremely costly and impractical, making natural gold far more valuable.
